WORKSHOP BRIEF

The workshop takes on a controversial discussion about nature and how architects, visual artists and landscape designers might engage with its contemporary representation. Borrowing Zizek’s words, nowadays “nature is over”; classical landscapes have been progressively replaced by a new notion of synthetic environments, in which natural and mutated visions co-exist. It is precisely in this new hybrid territory that the course begins.

In particular, during the workshop students will create a new planet, made of hyper realistic lush green fields, colorful flowers, buzzing insects, fantastical animals, calm rivers and mountain lakes. Each scene is digitally designed with extreme care, down to the minutiae of the smallest creature, to convince and immerse the audience into the reality of the digital dream.

3D digital Flora and Fauna specimens are composed into a series of intricate idyllic ecosystems. These contemporary landscapes are filled with hyper realistic artificial nature and they are a constructed miniature of a familiar jet imaginary place. Each object is a world unto itself.

The workshop questions the contemporary status of hyper-realistic digital representation and the impact it has on human perception, trust and imagination. The students’ projects will not yield to clean judgments about what is living or non-living, organic or technological, true or synthetic, they will create instead an attractive alternate reality that always remains eerily out of reach.

The workshop is a 5 days  full immersion in a wide range of contemporary digital tools and rendering techniques like Cinema 4D, Octane Render, Bridge and Quixel. The course is conducted by Andrea Cadioli, Associate Professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), and is co-hosted by the Nakamoto Environmental Design program at the School of Design and the Digital Environmental Design and Construction Studio, Studio 2 of the Center for Digital and Artificial Intelligence.Students will receive personalized feedback throughout the length of the workshop. The daily Technical Tutorials will introduce the students to a specific digital workflow with platforms widely used in photo-real visuals. The class will culminate with a final review, where students present their design work and receive feedback from architects and design professionals.
